Snowboarding in Les Deux Alpes

Located in the Southern Alps, Les Deux Alpes is renowned for its excellent snow record, year round glacier skiing, many hours of sunshine and reputation as one of the best party towns in the Alps.

The ski area is extensive, ranging from the Dome de la Lauze glacier (which at 3,568m, is the highest skiable glacier in Europe) right down to the town at 1650m. The mountain is famed for being ‘upside down’ due to the fact that its flattest terrain is up at the top while the lower slopes are the steepest. In spite of this the resort is perfect for all levels of skier and boarder and great for families. There are even some gentle slopes and free drag lifts right at the base of the mountain where those taking to the slopes for the first time can make their first few tentative turns.

It’s also ideal for freestylers and has one of the biggest and best terrain parks in Europe in addition to a range of other freestyle areas throughout the resort.

Those who prefer their pistes ‘au natural’ will also be in heaven as Les Deux Alpes is linked to freeriders paradise, La Grave, which can be accessed by snow cat from the top of the glacier.

Les Deux Alpes’ altitude and its glacier make the resort an excellent choice for early and late, and even off-season skiing. The only disadvantage to its altitude is the fact that there are very few trees, so visibility can be extremely poor when the snow’s coming down. It’s fortunate then, that they also get a great many hours of sunshine!

Off the slopes there’s loads going on and amidst Les Deux Alpes’ apartments and hotels is a cinema, bowling alley, sports complex, outdoor climbing wall and more than 30 bars. As a tally like that would suggest, the town has a pretty lively nightlife and you can party hard seven nights a week if you so desire. Popular haunts include The Red Frog, Pub Le Windsor, Smithy’s and the two night clubs L’Avalanche and L’Opera which stay open until 4am. However, as it’s a big town it’s also easy to escape the madness if you’d rather retreat for a quiet night.
